How did you first become vegan?
I had many friends in college that were vegetarian, and I decided to give it a try to be healthier. When I moved after graduating, I met tons of awesome vegans in Los Angeles. My friend Sue made me watch the "Meet Your Meat" video by PETA and that was enough to turn me vegan – overnight! She had been vegetarian too, so we made the switch together. It was much easier to explore veganism with a friend, so we could support and motivate each other. That was 8 years ago.
What inspired you to pursue cooking/baking?
After going vegan, I started teaching myself how to cook because there wasn't as many options as today. Sue and I would have dinner parties for friends, and I realized how much I loved to feed people. Seeing their faces light up when they ate my food made me so happy. So I decided to go to culinary school and do something compassionate with my future. That's when I learned about macrobiotics and how foods affect everything in your life, not just your own personal health.
What are your favorite resources for new vegan inspiration?
I get inspiration from all kinds of things. Sometimes I will try something at a restaurant that will spark an idea. Since I'm a big advocate of locally grown produce I try to visit the farmer's market to see what's available and come up with ideas from that. I know many amazing chefs that are always inspiring me and the vegan blogging community is full of ideas and inspiration. Often I just open up the fridge and pantry to see what's hanging out in there and whip something up off the top of my head.
What's your favorite flavor of soy yogurt?
I love to use the plain soy yogurt in cooking and baking because of it's neutral flavor and versatility. For just eating with breakfast, I love all the flavors!
