Probiotics
What are probiotics?
Probiotic is a fancy way of describing multiple strains of living cultures that, when consumed in quantities recommended by your physician, are thought to be beneficial to the intestinal system.
Why are they thought to be good for us?
Our gastrointestinal tract is full of both bad and good bacteria that are necessary for digestion. When the bacteria is in balance it can provide the human body with digestive health. If we lose that balance the body may experience digestive discomfort or other possible ailments such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation or other chronic diseases. The living cultures found in yogurt are thought to increase the good bacteria in the digestive tract and are believed to help prevent a host of maladies.
Visit the International Probiotics Association website for additional information on probiotics.
What probiotics are in WholeSoy yogurts?
WholeSoy yogurts contain the following probiotics: L. Acidophilus, B. Bifidium, L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus and L. Plantarum LM (Unsweetened Plain only). The culture S. Thermophilus provides a tart yogurt flavor and L. Bulgaricus contributes to the yogurt's consistency. To prevent destroying the live probiotic cultures, we always add them to our products after pasteurization. We add billions of CFU's (colony forming units) of living cultures to our yogurts at the time of production and test the viability of those cultures both at the time of production and at the time of expiration. The CFU count is analyzed regularly at an independent lab. At the time of expiration our yogurts still contain hundreds of millions of viable living cultures if the yogurt is kept well refrigerated. We add hundreds of billions of CFU's of the L. Plantarum LM culture to our Unsweetened Plain and it has about 20 billion total CFU's per serving (also must be kept well refrigerated during the lifespan of the yogurt).
In accordance with our commitment to vegan products, the cultures we use are all grown on a vegetable medium.

The FDA does not currently recognize the possible health benefits of probiotics because more clinical research is needed to make any health claim.
